Polygon (MATIC) Price History: 2019 to 2025
Polygon's price journey from 2019 to present is one of the most dramatic stories in all of cryptocurrency. Starting from a $0.00263 ICO price in April 2019, MATIC went on to achieve a peak of $2.92 in December 2021 before entering a prolonged bear market.
2019 – ICO and Early Days
MATIC launched via an IEO on Binance Launchpad in April 2019, raising approximately $5.6 million. The initial sale price was $0.00263. After listing, the token briefly spiked then settled into a sideways range of $0.01–$0.02 for most of the year. The all-time low of $0.003012 was recorded on May 10, 2019.
2020 – Mainnet Launch
The Matic Network mainnet went live in May 2020 and attracted early DeFi projects including Decentraland and MakerDAO. The average price rose to around $0.01 as developer interest grew steadily.
2021 – The Historic Bull Run
February 2021 brought the transformative rebrand from Matic Network to Polygon. This triggered a massive rally — MATIC surged over 7,000% in just three months, hitting an initial peak of $2.68 in May 2021. After a brief correction, the token recovered and set its all-time high of $2.92 on December 26, 2021, fueled by NFT mania and Ethereum scaling demand.
2022 – Bear Market
2022 was the worst year for most cryptocurrencies. MATIC dropped from $2.53 at the start of the year to $0.361 by year-end — a decline of approximately 85%. Despite this, MATIC outperformed many altcoins due to Polygon's continued ecosystem growth.
2023 – Recovery Attempt
MATIC rallied in early 2023, briefly pushing above $1.56 in February 2023 — its best price since April 2022. However, broader macro pressure and Polygon's announcement of 20% workforce cuts weighed on sentiment. By year-end, MATIC had declined again toward $0.70–$0.80.
2024 – POL Migration
The MATIC-to-POL token migration officially began on September 4, 2024. Under the new POL ticker, the token reached approximately $1.29 in March 2024. After the migration, POL recovered to $0.68 by year-end despite initial uncertainty.
2025 – Continued Decline
2025 proved the worst year in Polygon's history. POL fell from $0.45 at the start of the year to roughly $0.10 by year-end — a decline of approximately 78%. Heavy competition from rival Layer 2 networks and weak altcoin sentiment were key factors.
